FC’s Technical, Education and Government Relations Committee have worked together to create a training presentation designed to provide unbiased information to educate building code officials and related groups on specification issues related to fenestration products. The presentation has 3 sections, the first of which covers the National Building Code 2010. Included in this component is an overview of the code sections concerning windows, doors and skylights, reference to NAFS in the 2010 NBC and what is covered under the NBC. Section two explains what NAFS is, how it is different from CSA, what are the new performance ratings, an explanation of the Canadian supplement to NAFS and what the new labeling requirements are. A third section discusses how are the performance requirements for fenestration products determined, including determining DP, determining water and Canadian resistance requirements.
The presentation will soon be made available for use and reference by members on the FC website. Please keep checking on the members’ login page for updates! |

The Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC) has invited Fenestration Canada and its members—as stakeholders in the development of the National Model Construction Codes—to take part in the winter 2012 public review of proposed changes to incorporate energy efficiency for housing and small buildings into Part 9 of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) 2010. FC members are invited to participate in this initiative by going to the members’ login page. |

The Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB), in March 2011, undertook a review of the CGSB Standards for Glass and Related Products by means of surveys. The results of the Stakeholder survey indicated a number of CGSB Standards are in-use, are relevant and that there is some support by stakeholders to participate in a technical review of the standards. The CGSB operates on a revenue-dependent, cost-recovery basis, and therefore funding support to administer the standards development process to develop a new edition or reaffirmation of the standard is required. |

The 2006 Ontario Building Code (OBC) was updated on January 1, 2012. These changes introduced the Supplementary Standard SB-12 which changed the energy performance requirements for Part 9 buildings in the 2006 OBC. SB-12 introduced three possible methods of proving compliance with the energy performance requirement of the 2006 OBC. The three methods include:
- Prescriptive Compliance Packages (Subsection 2.1.1),
- Performance Compliance (Subsection 2.1.2), and
- Other Acceptable Compliance Methods (Subsection 2.1.3).
These changes represent a significant change to the OBC and the guide is meant to help clarify the changes for fenestration performance. |
